The Staff Counsel will support United Domestic Workers of America, UDW/AFSCME Local 3930, in enforcing collective bargaining rights and collective bargaining agreements on behalf of home care and family child care providers across California. This role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful impact through labor advocacy, legal enforcement, collective bargaining, and support for workers, families, seniors, people with disabilities, and children in care.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal support for collective bargaining in the IHSS and family child care sectors, including serving as chief negotiator when assigned. 
  • Enforces bargaining rights and contract provisions through PERB proceedings, arbitrations, litigation, and other legal actions.
  • Drafts contracts, settlements, and legal filings; represents UDW in hearings and enforcement matters; and provides strategic counsel on labor relations, negotiations, and member advocacy while collaborating with union leaders, staff, and stakeholders to advance workers' rights.

Education:

Juris Doctor degree and active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California.

Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of labor law or related legal experience.
  • Knowledge of public-sector labor relations law; experience with PERB, NLRB, arbitration, administrative proceedings, or litigation preferred.
  • Strong legal research, writing, analytical, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to interpret laws, regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and contracts, manage cases, develop legal strategy, and advise clients.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and a demonstrated commitment to labor rights, equity, and social justice.
  • Proficiency with standard legal and office technology tools.

Location: San Diego, CA.

Annual salary range with benefits: $150,000 - $190,000.
