Community Legal Aid SoCal Seeks a Public Benefits Staff Attorney

The Public Benefits Staff Attorney will work as part of the Public Benefits Unit to represent and provide legal services to members of the community facing challenges related to their federal and state public benefits. This full-time, exempt, hybrid position reports to the Supervising Attorney. 

Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in public benefits matters, including eligibility disputes, appeals, and administrative hearings.

  • Handle all aspects of case management, including client counseling, investigation, legal research, and drafting pleadings.

  • Litigate cases in state and federal court when appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate case records and case management system data.

  • Engage in policy advocacy, community outreach, legal education, workshops, and clinics.

  • Supervise paralegals, law students, interns, and volunteers.

  • Collaborate with legal teams and community partners to provide comprehensive client services.

  • Support grant reporting and perform other duties as needed to advance the organization's mission.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor degree and an active member in good-standing of the California Bar or member of another state bar and ability to register as a legal services provider.

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel throughout the service area required.

  • Knowledge of Social Security, public benefits, administrative law, and state/federal appeals preferred.

  • Strong advocacy, communication, problem-solving, and client counseling skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Experience identifying legal issues and providing practical legal advice.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to serving low-income and vulnerable populations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal technology tools.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Experience using client-centered, trauma-informed practices.

  • Commitment to the organization's mission and values required.

  • Prior legal services experience and bilingual proficiency preferred.

Annual salary range with benefits: $80,000 - $98,000
